Here, We See An Example of How Much I Suck At Math ... January 24, 2006

monster (internal or external) + victim >= potential for heroism

monster + realization of monsterhood = potential for metamorphosis into hero
(the connection seems kind of obscure. think about it like this: a monster who destroys itself through fear, guilt, anger etc is, in essence, taking over the hero's job, which is to destroy the monster. so either way, whether the monster tries to clean up it's act or decides to get angry about being attacked, it destroys itself when it begins to see itself as such.)

hero + realization of heroism = potential for metamorphosis into monster
(think pride, think indifference towards the position of the enemy, who often times merely wants to continue to live and survive the only way it knows how. the hero also destroys themselves when they begin to realize how much others appreciate their hereto unconscious efforts. they begin to consciously expect rewards. )

hero + monster = ?
(the reality of being a living thing who must consume in order to live?)

haven't figured that last one out just yet. what's more, although it seems pretty obvious to me on some levels that a hero is the opposite of a monster, and so hero + monster SHOULD = 0, nothing, lack of existance for either party, I just can't quite reconcile the idea with what I see happening in real life. monsters and heroes only seem to exist in the minds of those whom they interact with. it all depends on your perspective as to who is a monster and who is a hero. a cook roasting a chicken in the oven, from the chicken's viewpoint, is just as bad as that witch was from the children's point of view in the story of Hansel and Gretel. but to the cook, and to you if you're the one who's going to be eating said chicken, it's just dinner. from the chicken's point of view, those who would kill and possibly consume you (germs, large predators, parasites, your girlfriend's husband) and who you consider monsters suddenly become heroes.
